EFCC Set to Auction Over 850 Seized Cars From Corruption and Financial Crime Cases

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has unveiled plans to auction over 850 vehicles forfeited to the Nigerian government as part of its anti-corruption efforts. These vehicles, ranging from high-end luxury cars to popular models like the Toyota Camry, were seized during investigations into cases involving corruption, money laundering, cybercrime, and other financial offenses.

In a statement released on Monday, the EFCC announced that the auctions would be conducted in compliance with legal frameworks such as the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, the Public Procurement Act, 2007, and the Proceeds of Crime (Recovery and Management) Act, 2022. The auctions will take place in several major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, in collaboration with authorized auctioneers.

“The General Public is hereby notified that the @officialEFCC, through its appointed Auctioneers, will conduct e-Auction of the under-listed vehicles that are subject of final forfeiture orders,” the statement read. The Commission assured the public of a transparent and fair process, encouraging interested participants to take part.

This announcement comes amid the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to recover and repatriate stolen assets. In September 2024, the Commission handed over 53 recovered vehicles and $180,300 to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede revealed that the funds included $164,000 stolen from a Canadian woman, Elena Bogomas, in a romance scam, and $16,300 taken from Sandra Butler in another fraudulent scheme.

Olukoyede emphasized that such recoveries highlight the importance of international collaboration in combating financial crimes. “These successes are a testament to our commitment to fighting corruption and our partnership with global law enforcement agencies,” he stated.

As Nigeria continues to battle the menace of financial crimes, the EFCC’s initiative to auction these vehicles signals a step toward not only recovering stolen assets but also reinforcing the country’s stance on accountability and justice.
