In a coordinated sting operation, officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Sunday raided several hotels and apartments in the Osubi and Ugolo areas of Okpe Local Government, Delta State. The operation, targeting individuals suspected of involvement in internet fraud, led to the arrest of 46 people.
An authoritative source confirmed the details of the raid to Springs News on Monday. “The EFCC operatives stormed Osubi and Ugolo, raiding apartments and hotels where they alleged that fraudsters had been hiding, and arrested several individuals, including visitors who were staying in the hotels,” the source revealed.
The locations raided included Cletano Hotel, Fairview Apartments, Bright V Apartments, Luxe Mirage Hotel, and 10/10 Apartments. According to the source, the arrests were made based on intelligence reports indicating fraudulent activities in the area.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, confirmed the operation, stating that the raid was carried out by the Benin Zonal Directorate of the agency. “Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Sunday, September 8, 2024, arrested 46 suspected internet fraudsters at various locations in Warri, Delta State,” he said.
Oyewale also highlighted the recovery of 13 exotic cars, along with laptops and phones, during the operation. He assured that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The EFCC’s crackdown on internet fraudsters, often referred to as “Yahoo boys,” has intensified in recent years as the agency seeks to curb cybercrime activities across Nigeria.
