The Edo State Police Command, in collaboration with the Edo State Migration Agency, has rescued two teenage girls, aged 13 and 14, from a failed human trafficking attempt to Libya. One of the victims is reported to be living with sickle cell disease.
The girls, who left Edo on Sunday, had traveled as far as Zaria, Kaduna State, before their trafficker ordered them to return home following the arrest of his mother, Mrs. Comfort Etim, now in police custody. They were safely reunited with their families on Wednesday night.
At the Migration Agency, the victims revealed they were lured with false promises of domestic jobs for an elderly couple in Italy. Their sponsor instructed them not to inform their parents and placed them on a bus at Aduwawa Motor Park, Benin City, with further instructions to contact an accomplice in Kano.
One of the girls, identified as Success, said they were provided food and disguises for the journey but expressed relief at being rescued. Her companion, who battles sickle cell disease, said she initially thought the trip abroad was a life-changing opportunity to support her mother.
The agency’s Director General, Lucky Agazumah, confirmed the rescue and vowed sanctions against the transport company that conveyed the unaccompanied minors. He added that several accomplices connected to the trafficking ring have been arrested and will face prosecution.
