Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has relieved Fred Itua of his duties as Chief Press Secretary (CPS) and appointed Dr. Patrick Ebojele as his successor.
The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, announced the changes in a statement dated December 4, 2025, made available in Benin City. While no official reason was given for Itua’s removal, sources suggest it followed concerns over poor performance and calls from opposition leaders to restructure the state’s media team.
This recent change follows earlier adjustments in the government’s communication strategy, including the replacement of the former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Paul Ohonbamu, with Prince Kassim Afegbua. Observers say these moves reflect the governor’s efforts to improve government messaging and ensure effective communication with the public.
The statement highlighted Dr. Ebojele’s qualifications, describing him as a renowned journalist, public administrator, researcher, and lecturer with extensive experience in media, public affairs, and academia. His career includes stints as Edo/Delta Correspondent for Channels Television, as well as roles at New Nigerian Newspaper, Champion Newspaper, and Comet Newspapers. Until his appointment, he was a lecturer in the Department of Public Administration at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State.
According to the statement, Dr. Ebojele’s appointment “reflects the commitment of the present administration to strengthen and deepen communication channels between the Government and the good people of Edo State, ensuring clarity, transparency, and effective dissemination of Government policies, programmes, and activities.”
Fred Itua will hand over to Dr. Ebojele and await a new assignment, which will be communicated in due course. The government expressed appreciation for Itua’s contributions and service during his tenure.
