The Edo State High Court, led by Justice M. Itsueli, has convicted six individuals involved in internet fraud and ordered the forfeiture of their assets. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought the convicts โ€” Idemudia Destiny, Osifo Destiny, Nomanidobo Favour, Dauda Ahmed, David Samuel, and Wisdom John โ€” before the court on separate one-count charges, including impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, possession of fraudulent documents, and retention of proceeds of crime.

The defendants all pleaded guilty to the charges. In response, prosecution counsel K.Y. Bello urged the court to impose appropriate sentences, while the defense counsel requested leniency, citing the convicts’ remorse for their actions.

Justice Itsueli sentenced each of the six to two years in prison, with an option of a โ‚ฆ200,000 fine. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of their mobile phones, laptops, and funds in their bank accounts, deeming them proceeds and tools of the fraud they committed. The convicts were also required to sign undertakings to maintain good behavior going forward.

The EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate apprehended the fraudsters following credible intelligence that revealed their involvement in various online fraudulent activities.
