The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his passing as a profound loss to Nigeria, West Africa, and the African continent.

In an official statement released from its Abuja headquarters, ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Alieu Touray, extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Buhari family, and the entire Nigerian populace.

Touray hailed Buhari as a staunch advocate for democracy, peace, and regional integration. He emphasized that Buhari’s leadership significantly shaped West Africa’s path toward stability and sustainable development.

“President Buhari’s legacy of democratic governance and his dedication to regional cooperation will be remembered for generations. His efforts laid a solid foundation for peace and unity not only in Nigeria but across the entire ECOWAS region,” Touray stated.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, was widely respected for his anti-corruption stance and his role in promoting democratic transitions across West Africa.

His death marks the end of an era, but his contributions to governance and regional diplomacy remain a guiding light for leaders across the continent.
