The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against Nigerian activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, as well as global tech giants X (formerly Twitter) and Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook.
According to court filings, the case revolves around social media posts deemed offensive to President Bola Tinubu. The DSS alleges that the defendants published content capable of undermining national stability and public confidence in government.
Reacting on his verified X account, Sowore confirmed the charges, describing them as “novel offences” fabricated to silence critics of the administration. He further branded the case an abuse of state power but pledged to honour court summons whenever the trial is scheduled.
Legal analysts say the move to include international tech firms in the charge is unprecedented in Nigeria’s judicial history and could test the extent of government control over digital platforms operating in the country.
The case is yet to be assigned to a specific judge, but it is expected to spark intense debates around freedom of expression, digital rights, and government accountability.
