Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has stirred fresh controversy following strong remarks made during an interview after a protest in Abia State calling for the release of detained separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore, who addressed supporters and journalists, cautioned against comparing Kanu with Sunday Igboho, insisting that both figures represent different paths and choices in Nigeria’s agitation landscape.

“I dare anyone to stop me from speaking the truth. Do not compare Kanu to Igboho,” Sowore declared. He alleged that while both men were reportedly approached with financial inducements, Kanu refused such offers, maintaining his stance. In contrast, Sowore claimed that Igboho “betrayed himself,” adding that his political relevance has significantly diminished.

The activist used the platform to reiterate his demand for Kanu’s release, describing his continued detention as unjust and politically motivated. The protest in Abia drew attention from pro-Biafra supporters and civil rights groups, further intensifying calls for a legal and transparent resolution to the matter.

Beyond the Kanu issue, Sowore made serious allegations against a former governor of Ebonyi State, now serving as Minister of Works under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He accused the former governor of orchestrating the prolonged detention of an entire family in Ebonyi since 2025, describing the act as a gross abuse of power and a violation of human rights.

Sowore further alleged that the same political figure may have links to the disappearance of five contractors who, according to him, remain unaccounted for. He called for an independent investigation into the matter, urging security agencies to act swiftly.

In addition, he criticized what he described as misplaced priorities in governance, pointing to the construction of a multi-billion naira airport in Ebonyi State. According to Sowore, the facility has yet to record any flight activity, raising concerns about transparency, accountability, and public fund utilization.

“These are the real issues Nigerians should be protesting about—impunity, misuse of public funds, and injustice,” he said.

The interview has since sparked mixed reactions across political and social circles, with supporters praising Sowore’s boldness while critics question the veracity of his claims. As tensions continue to rise, observers say the statements could further deepen political discourse around governance, accountability, and civil rights in Nigeria.
