Donald Trump has pulled off an astounding political comeback, regaining the White House as the declared winner of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Trump’s victory marks a historic feat, making him only the second president in U.S. history to serve non-consecutive terms, a rare accomplishment not seen since Grover Cleveland over 130 years ago. His defeat of Vice President Kamala Harris signifies a dramatic return for a figure whose presidency and post-presidential years were marked by controversies, including two impeachments and a recent conviction on business fraud charges.
The 78-year-old Trump will also set a new record as the oldest president inaugurated, surpassing President Joe Biden’s previous record by five months. His path to victory included critical wins in key swing states such as North Carolina, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, mirroring his 2016 election strategy that propelled him to his first term in office.
World leaders quickly responded to the news of Trump’s victory, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu among the first to extend congratulations. Posting on social media platform X, Netanyahu expressed enthusiasm, calling Trump’s return “history’s greatest comeback” and praising a “powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.”
Global reactions continued, with French President Emmanuel Macron also sharing his thoughts. “Ready to work together as we were able to do during four years. With your convictions and mine. In respect and ambition. For more peace and prosperity,” Macron posted, highlighting a willingness to collaborate on shared goals.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte echoed similar sentiments, voicing his optimism about working with Trump to “advance peace through strength.” Rutte referenced current international challenges, including rising tensions with Russia, global terrorism, and strategic competition with China, along with the growing alignment of countries like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.
The election outcome has reignited debate within the United States and abroad as to what Trump’s return will mean for America’s domestic policies, its foreign relations, and the future of global diplomacy. For now, supporters hail it as a vindication, while detractors brace for a potential return to divisive politics that characterized his previous term.
