A dispatch rider lost his life on Thursday after being struck by a moving train at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the rider, whose motorcycle had registration number AGL 179 QR, attempted to cross the tracks despite an oncoming train and active warning signals. The collision occurred near the route leading to Ikeja GRA and resulted in his instant death.
Eyewitnesses said the victim ignored both warning lights and the barriers, trying to outrun the train. “He was in a rush and disregarded all the signals,” one witness said.
LASTMA officials promptly arrived to control traffic and secure the area, while officers from the Shogunle Police Division and personnel from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the body.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the deceased’s family, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the dangers of impatience and disregard for traffic safety.
“This tragic event highlights the grave consequences of ignoring railway warnings. We urge all road users, especially dispatch riders, to exercise patience and caution,” he said.
Bakare-Oki added that LASTMA would strengthen its public awareness and enforcement efforts around major railway crossings to prevent future tragedies.
