A significant accident was narrowly prevented in Lagos on Sunday after a speeding Lexus SUV collided with a petrol tanker fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) near Berger Suya, inward Mile 2. The impact triggered a multiple-vehicle crash that damaged several cars displayed for sale along the roadside.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the rapid response of emergency teams stopped the situation from escalating into a deadly inferno.
In a statement released by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, preliminary findings indicated that the Lexus SUV with registration number LSR 606 XH lost control and struck the tanker, forcing it off the road and into parked vehicles.
LASTMA officers on duty immediately secured the accident scene, diverted traffic, and coordinated the safe transfer of fuel from the damaged tanker into another vehicle in order to prevent an explosion.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service flushed out the spilled petrol to eliminate fire risk, while police officers from the Trinity Division provided security throughout the operation.
The SUV driver sustained injuries and was handed over to the police for further questioning. The tanker driver reportedly fled the scene following the incident.
Bakare-Oki praised the coordinated efforts of the emergency responders, noting that their professionalism and swift action protected residents from a potential large-scale tragedy.
He cautioned motorists to avoid overspeeding, identifying the dangerous practice as a leading cause of preventable road crashes across the state.
According to the statement, LASTMA remains committed to strengthening round-the-clock operations, improving public awareness on road safety, and collaborating closely with relevant agencies to ensure efficient management of road emergencies across Lagos
