A suspect, identified as Alex Kehinde, has confessed to the killing of an 80-year-old man and the collection of a N2 million ransom from the victim’s son after disposing of the man’s mobile phone in Delta State.
The confession was made in a video shared by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State, Bright Edafe.
Kehinde revealed that he and an accomplice, who is currently on the run, lured the elderly man—who had hired him for a building renovation project—to his house under the pretense of fixing a plumbing issue.
According to the suspect, they took the man upstairs, restrained him, and smothered him with a foam material when he attempted to call for help, leading to his death. After the crime, they reportedly stole his motorcycle and phone.
The phone was later sold for a small amount after they removed the SIM card, while the motorcycle was abandoned elsewhere.
Kehinde further admitted that they used the victim’s SIM card to contact his son and demanded a ransom, which eventually led to the payment of N2 million.
Police authorities say the incident occurred on February 3, 2026, and that the case began after the discovery of the victim’s body in his residence.
The police have condemned the act, describing it as a deeply disturbing and brutal crime, while efforts continue to apprehend the fleeing accomplice.
