Nigerian Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has sounded the alarm over an alleged plot to cancel his highly anticipated December concert in Lagos. The singer attributed the move to his recent comments on Nigeria’s economy, which sparked widespread controversy.
The issue began during Davido’s appearance on the American podcast Big Homies House, where he advised Americans against relocating to Africa, particularly Nigeria, citing the country’s struggling economy. Describing the situation as being in “shambles,” Davido’s remarks quickly became a topic of heated debate, drawing sharp criticism from Nigerians at home and abroad.
Prominent public figures, including Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri, slammed the singer for what they called an “irresponsible” statement, accusing him of tarnishing Nigeria’s international image.
Responding to the backlash, Davido doubled down, defending his position and labeling Nigerian entertainers as the country’s “real ambassadors.” In a bold post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Y’all mad ‘cause we the real ambassadors!”
As the debate raged on, the situation escalated, with the singer revealing that efforts were underway to cancel his Lagos concert, an event eagerly awaited by fans.
“Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” Davido tweeted, hinting at his readiness to boycott the performance if the threats materialize.
The unfolding controversy has further polarized public opinion, with fans rallying around Davido in support while critics continue to berate his remarks.
The December concert, which was expected to be a highlight of Nigeria’s festive season, now hangs in the balance. Whether Davido will perform as planned or the threats will succeed remains to be seen.
