After over a year of anticipation since its official launch in May 2023, the Dangote Refinery has finally rolled out its first batch of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. The landmark event, which took place on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector and promises a new era of fuel supply in the country.
The 650,000 barrels per day facility, owned by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, is set to transform the Nigerian petroleum landscape. At a press conference held on Tuesday, Dangote declared, “It’s a celebration day for Nigerians,” underscoring the importance of this achievement for the nation.
He emphasized the quality of the petrol produced at the refinery, assuring Nigerians that it meets the highest global standards. “We are now going to have good petrol while the engines of your vehicles will last longer. You will not be having an engine issue, which a lot of us were having. It won’t happen at all,” Dangote stated confidently. He further added, “The quality here will match that of anywhere in the world; US, America, we will make sure that nobody will beat us in terms of quality.”
The refinery’s commencement of petrol production is expected to significantly impact Nigeria’s economy. Dangote highlighted that once the company finalizes its agreements with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the product will begin to circulate in the market.
“As soon as we finalize with the NNPCL, our product will start going into the market,” he confirmed.
The implications of this development extend beyond the oil sector. Dangote expressed optimism that the refinery’s operations would play a critical role in restoring Nigeria’s industrial and manufacturing sectors. The refinery is poised to drive real import substitution, reducing the country’s dependence on imported fuel. This move is expected to save and earn foreign exchange, stabilize the naira, and help bring down inflation and the cost of living.
With the Dangote Refinery now operational, Nigerians can look forward to a more stable and efficient supply of high-quality petrol, signaling a new dawn for the nation’s energy independence and economic stability.
