Daimler Truck to Assemble Mercedes-Benz Trucks in Senegal from 2026

Global vehicle manufacturer Daimler Truck has announced plans to begin assembling Mercedes-Benz trucks in Senegal as part of its expansion strategy in West Africa. The German automotive giant will supply disassembled trucks under a modular system, which will then be reassembled at a new assembly plant in Senegal.

The facility, which will be located in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, is scheduled to begin production in 2026 and will focus on manufacturing special-purpose vehicles for defence, disaster relief, and municipal services tailored to the Senegalese market.

Daimler Truck emphasized that the project supports the localization of vehicle production in West Africa and is expected to spur economic growth, create jobs, and strengthen industrial development across the region. The initiative is being implemented in close collaboration with the German government, further underlining its strategic importance.

While Daimler Truck will provide technical support and vehicle components, construction and plant operations will be managed by a separate company, which has signed a business agreement with the government of Senegal.

A letter of intent formalizing the collaboration was signed by the three main partners in Dakar. This move marks Daimler Truck’s third significant presence in Africa, adding to its existing facilities in South Africa and Kenya, where it already assembles Mercedes-Benz Trucks from imported parts.

Senegal, a stable democracy on the western coast of Africa, is positioning itself as a regional manufacturing hub. With a population of around 18 million, largely made up of young people, the government is actively courting foreign investment to reduce unemployment and drive development.

According to the World Bank, Senegal is projected to lead economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa in 2025, with a forecasted growth rate of 7.9%, driven partly by its new oil and gas exports.

This strategic move by Daimler Truck aligns with both its growth plans and Senegal’s vision for industrialization and job creation.
