A Lagos-based customer of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), Ariyo Ahmed Adewale,http://Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), Ariyo Ahmed Adewale, has alleged that the bank ordered his arrest after he protested at one of its branches over the mysterious disappearance of N2.1 million from his account.
In an interview with SaharaReporters, Ariyo explained that the incident took place at the GTBank branch in Kosofe, Lagos, where he had gone to demand answers regarding multiple unauthorized transactions linked to his debit card.
According to him, GTBank claimed the funds were used for purchases on the e-commerce platform Jumia — a claim he firmly denied.
“On Saturday last week, I noticed a deduction of N2 million from my account. I immediately called GTBank customer care to block my account and report the fraud. Sadly, before any action was taken, the amount increased with more unauthorized transactions,” Ariyo stated.
He insisted he had never used Jumia and had not authorized any online payments.
“My debit card never left my possession. My phone was also with me throughout. No one had access to either of them. I didn’t authorize any payments, especially not on Jumia,” he said.
In an attempt to get clarity, Ariyo visited the GTBank Kosofe branch and requested a printed statement of all recent transactions. However, he said his demands were ignored, and when he raised his voice in frustration, the branch manager contacted officers from Alapere Police Station.
“The police asked me to write a formal complaint and advised that my lawyer file a petition regarding the fraudulent transactions. But what shocked me was the bank saying it couldn’t provide details of the suspicious activity,” he told SaharaReporters.
He added that the bank could only show his remaining balance and the last verified transaction he personally carried out before the unauthorized debits began.
Ariyo described the situation as a major failure in banking security, raising concerns for other customers who might experience similar losses without proper recourse.
“I had no choice but to protest. Over N2 million vanished from my account without my consent, and the bank cannot give me a clear explanation. What should customers do when their money isn’t safe?” he said.
Ariyo is demanding a full investigation and a refund of the stolen funds. He warned that if the matter is not resolved, he will pursue legal action.- Source Sahara reporter
