Clash at LASU: Security Forces Break Up Student Protest Over Admission Exclusion

Tension erupted at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo campus, after security operatives reportedly assaulted diploma students protesting their exclusion from the university’s direct entry admission list.
The students, who recently completed their diploma programmes with strong academic results, accused LASU of reneging on its earlier promise to admit them directly into 200-level degree courses.
Eyewitnesses said the protest began peacefully but turned chaotic when campus security intervened, using force to disperse the demonstrators. Videos circulating online showed students being dragged, chased, and beaten, with some sustaining injuries requiring medical attention.
One student stated, “We were only asking for fairness and transparency. We were told a 3.0 CGPA was sufficient for admission. Now, LASU has raised the requirement to 3.5, leaving over 300 of us stranded.”
Sources revealed that several affected students graduated with CGPAs between 4.0 and 4.8, yet were still denied admission following the sudden policy change. Many had already purchased JAMB Direct Entry forms based on the initial assurance.
The students claimed they had reached out to the Vice Chancellor, Dean of Student Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education, and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, but received no response.
Frustrated, the students staged a peaceful protest on campus, carrying placards reading: “We deserve fairness” and “Keep your promise, LASU.” Witnesses said the demonstration was violently broken up, leaving some students hospitalised and others traumatized.
A protester emphasized, “We are not fighting LASU. We are only fighting for our future. If our departments are full, the university can offer related courses. We just want to continue our education.”
