Tension erupted in Abuja on Monday morning as security operatives fired gunshots and tear gas to disperse protesters demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Human rights activist and protest organizer, Omoyele Sowore, narrowly escaped after security agents, including police and military officers, stormed the protest venue around 7 a.m.
Viral footage circulating online shows Sowore and several other demonstrators fleeing the chaotic scene as security personnel took control of the area.
The protesters had planned to march to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, to press for Kanu’s release. However, the Nigeria Police Force had earlier cautioned the group against holding any demonstration near the Villa, citing security concerns.
