Bayern Munich got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a flying start with a 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Allianz Arena, thanks to a brilliant brace from Harry Kane.
The clash marked Chelsea’s return to Europe’s elite competition since the 2022/23 season, but their lack of composure showed early. Trevoh Chalobah’s own goal gifted Bayern the opener, before Kane took center stage. The England captain, 32, converted a penalty he earned himself and later capitalized on a Malo Gusto mistake with a composed curling finish.
Cole Palmer briefly reignited Chelsea’s hopes, smashing home a superb goal on his 100th club appearance. However, the Blues were left to rue missed opportunities as Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández squandered clear chances, while Palmer saw a late strike ruled out for offside.
Bayern’s new loanee Nicolas Jackson featured against his parent club in stoppage time but failed to make an impact. Chelsea will now regroup ahead of next week’s home tie against Benfica, a fixture that could also see the dramatic return of José Mourinho to Stamford Bridge.
