Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has revealed why he confronted a Liverpool supporter during his side’s 3-2 Champions League defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Argentine coach, who was shown a red card in the closing stages, said he had endured constant verbal abuse from a Reds fan sitting close to the visitors’ bench.

Liverpool raced into an early lead within six minutes, thanks to goals from Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah. Atletico, however, responded through Marcos Llorente, who struck twice in the second half to make it 2-2 by the 81st minute.

But the hosts sealed victory when Virgil van Dijk powered home a late header from a Dominik Szoboszlai cross.

The winning goal sparked wild celebrations, including one fan in the front row who allegedly insulted and made offensive gestures towards Simeone. Security staff quickly intervened as the Atletico boss moved towards the supporter.

Speaking after the game, Simeone said:

“They’ve been insulting me non-stop from behind the bench for 90 minutes. My reaction wasn’t right, but anyone would understand the tension when you’re provoked the entire match.”

He added that the referee privately admitted to understanding his frustration but reminded him to remain calm regardless of provocation.

Simeone concluded by calling on Liverpool to identify the supporter involved, stressing that managers should not have to endure constant abuse and obscene gestures during matches.
