Chad Closes Border with Nigeria Amid Rising Tension and Alleged U.S. Military Activities in West Africa

The Government of Chad has announced the immediate closure of its border with Nigeria, citing heightened security risks and intelligence reports linking recent U.S. military movements to growing instability across West Africa.

Military sources in N’Djamena confirmed to counterterrorism analyst Zagazola Makama that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered a total border lockdown after intelligence indicated that terrorist groups operating in northern Nigeria were attempting to cross into Chadian territory.

In response, Chadian forces have been placed on high alert, with armored vehicles and heavily armed troops deployed along strategic routes connecting both nations. A senior military official, speaking anonymously, explained that the move aims to “prevent any militant group or external power from exploiting regional instability to threaten Chad’s sovereignty.”

Officials further noted that the closure underscores the fragile state of regional security, where unrest in one nation often spreads to its neighbors. However, experts warn that the lockdown could severely affect legitimate trade and humanitarian activities, particularly in communities that rely on cross-border commerce for their livelihoods.

According to Makama, Chad has not disclosed how long the border will remain sealed but promised to review the situation periodically as conditions evolve.

Meanwhile, local sources in Borno State, Nigeria, have disputed reports of the full closure, claiming that movement between Nigeria and Chad continues in some border communities.

The development comes amid mounting tension following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians. Analysts have urged the Nigerian government to pursue diplomatic engagement with Washington to prevent further escalation and ensure regional stability.
