Casemiro header secures point for Manchester United at Chelsea

October 22,2022

Casemiro came up with a 94th-minute leveller as Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday night.

The match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, but Jorginho sent the Blues ahead from the penalty spot in the 87th minute after Scott McTominay had been penalised for a foul on Armando Broja inside the box.

Casemiro then headed an equaliser for the visitors in the fourth minute of added time, with Chelsea and Man United remaining fourth and fifth respectively in the table.

Luke Shaw had the game’s first attempt in the ninth minute after breaking into a forward area, but the left-back’s effort was always moving wide of Kepa Arrizabalaga‘s post.

Kepa was called into action in the 13th minute, though, to keep out a low drive from Antony before a dangerous cross from Jadon Sancho caused issues in the home side’s box moments later.

Man United were dominating the match, and Kepa was forced into another save in the 27th minute to keep out Marcus Rashford, who attempted to beat the Spaniard from close range.

Kepa then keep out Rashford in the 33rd minute before getting down to keep out Sancho’s deflected strike, with Chelsea struggling to keep hold of the ball at Stamford Bridge.

Blues boss Graham Potter made a change in the 36th minute, bringing on Mateo Kovacic for Marc Cucurella, with the home side looking to gain a foothold in the contest.

Chelsea’s first real chance of the half came in the 39th minute when the ball broke for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang outside the box, but the forward could only roll his effort wide of the post

Christian Eriksen hit one wide of the Chelsea post from distance in the final stages of the half, before Aubameyang failed to make the most of a brilliant cross from Ben Chilwell down the other end.

Aubameyang had another opportunity following smart work from Sterling, but Diogo Dalot just did enough to put the forward off at the far post, before Antony put one wide down the other end after breaking into the box, with the two teams heading into the interval all square

Raphael Varane was forced to leave the field through injury just before the hour, with the Frenchman in tears, having appeared to suffer damage to his knee or ankle, leaving his World Cup hopes in doubt.

Chelsea were on top with the match approaching the final 20 minutes, with Trevoh Chalobah heading a corner over the crossbar during a strong period for the hosts.

Kepa had to keep down low to keep out a strike from Bruno Fernandes 15 minutes from time, but Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 84th minute when McTominay pulled Broja to the ground.

Jorginho stepped up to send the Blues ahead, but Man United were not finished and equalised in the final moments when Casemiro’s header from a deep Shaw cross found a route over the goal-line despite the best efforts of Kepa.

Next up for Man United is a home game against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday, while Chelsea will travel to Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Tuesday
