Ouagadougou, April 22, 2025 – The government of Burkina Faso has confirmed the disruption of a planned coup aimed at overthrowing the ruling military junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The plot reportedly involved both serving and retired military personnel working in collaboration with terrorist organizations.
In a nationally televised announcement, Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, disclosed that the group of conspirators had coordinated a scheme to storm the presidential palace on April 16, with the goal of seizing power and establishing a foreign-backed administration.
Coup Plot Linked to Terrorists and Foreign Influence
Minister Sana revealed that the coup plotters were accused of leaking sensitive military intelligence to extremist groups to spark unrest and incite rebellion within the ranks of the armed forces. He claimed the operatives were being guided by figures based in Ivory Coast, including two former army officers identified as key masterminds behind the failed attempt.
While Ivorian officials have yet to comment on the allegations, investigations are ongoing.
Attempts to Manipulate Religious and Traditional Leaders
The conspirators reportedly sought to manipulate public and military sentiment by recruiting the support of religious and traditional leaders, hoping to use their influence to legitimize the planned takeover and sway military officers into joining the rebellion.
Security forces have since arrested several individuals, including two officers, in connection with the alleged plot. According to local security sources, the arrests occurred last week following a discreet surveillance operation.
Not the First Coup Attempt Against Traoré’s Junta
Captain Ibrahim Traoré came to power in 2022 after ousting the previous government amid rising public frustration over the government’s inability to curb jihadist violence. Since assuming office, Traoré’s regime has pursued closer ties with Russia while distancing itself from France, the country’s former colonial power.
Despite these strategic shifts, terrorist attacks and extremist violence remain persistent threats across Burkina Faso, claiming hundreds of lives and displacing communities.
Burkina Faso Aligns With Mali and Niger Against ECOWAS
Burkina Faso recently withdrew from ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States), alongside neighboring Mali and Niger, forming a new security and political alliance of military-led governments. The alliance is positioned as a unified front against shared security threats and external political pressures.
The latest coup attempt underscores the fragile political environment in Burkina Faso and the ongoing struggle between military governance and insurgent threats.
