A major building collapse occurred in the early hours of Monday at No. 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop by UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos, leaving multiple occupants trapped under the debris.

The structure, a two-storey residential building, gave way shortly after midnight, prompting a swift emergency response. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received the alert at 12:20 a.m. and dispatched firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, who arrived at 12:29 a.m. to commence rescue operations.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that 15 survivors had been pulled from the rubble so far. The rescued individuals include seven adult men, four adult women, and four children, all sustaining varying injuries. They were immediately transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Meta and the General Hospital in Odan, Lagos Island, for urgent treatment.

Initial assessments revealed that the collapsed building had previously been identified as structurally defective. Despite warning signs, residents continued to occupy the premises before the tragic incident occurred.

Rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency teams work tirelessly to locate and save any remaining victims feared to be trapped. Adeseye reassured the public that state emergency services and partner agencies remain fully deployed at the scene with the priority of ensuring the safe recovery of every affected resident.
