A new performance assessment by civic-tech organization BudgiT has placed Anambra, Lagos, and Kwara States among the top five best-governed states in Nigeria.
The report—focused on how effectively states generate revenue, manage funds, and deliver public services—shows that the three states excelled in critical development indicators such as fiscal sustainability, transparency, education funding, and infrastructural improvement.
According to BudgiT, states that performed strongly demonstrated better accountability in spending, reduced reliance on federal allocations, and showed consistent commitments to investment in citizens’ welfare.
The ranking highlights a continued shift where subnationals are increasingly being evaluated not only by their revenue intake but by the measurable impact of their expenditure on the population.
BudgiT noted that improving governance at the state level remains vital to reducing poverty, strengthening local economies, and achieving sustainable development across the country.
The organization urged state governments with lower scores to improve financial discipline, boost internally generated revenue through innovation—not over-taxation—and ensure that public resources translate into real benefits for the people.
