A woman was killed on Thursday after armed men opened fire on the convoy of former Anambra governor and ex–Labour Minister Dr. Chris Ngige along the Nkpor–Nnobi route in Idemili North.
Ngige was not travelling with the convoy when the ambush occurred.
According to Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former media aide, the attackers — disguised in military and police uniforms — targeted the pilot vehicle, shooting a police officer and making away with his rifle and uniform.
Chukwuelobe said the female victim was gunned down after attempting to record the incident with her phone.
A shopkeeper who rushed out to check the commotion was also hit by stray bullets. Both he and the injured police officer were taken to the hospital for surgery and are expected to fully recover.
“No officer died,” Chukwuelobe clarified. “The escort commander who was shot has undergone surgery and is stable. The shop owner survived because the bullets missed his spine.”
Dr. Ngige confirmed the attack, assuring that all injured persons would be properly treated. He also expressed condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life.
Anambra Police spokesperson Ikenga Tochukwu revealed that a white Mercedes-Benz SUV stolen by the gunmen was later recovered, and a full-scale manhunt is now underway to track down the perpetrators.
Ngige, who governed Anambra from 2003 to 2006, is no stranger to violent attacks—having survived a high-profile abduction during his first year in office.
