President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to the presidency, the decision is part of efforts to immortalize the late Nigerian leader’s contributions to national development, particularly in the area of education and security in the North-East region.

The renamed institution, now known as Muhammadu Buhari University, was a key educational center during Buhari’s administration, especially amid the Boko Haram insurgency. Tinubu emphasized that Buhari’s legacy deserved permanent recognition through such a symbolic gesture.

This development comes shortly after a series of national tributes and events were held in memory of the former president, who passed away earlier in 2025.

The Federal Government said all necessary documentation for the name change would be processed and communicated to relevant authorities and stakeholders.
