A 50,000-litre gasoline tanker overturned while making a turn at Otedola Bridge in Lagos State on Tuesday night, sparking a massive explosion.
The incident occurred around 8:18 p.m. on Tuesday, though no casualties have been confirmed at this time. The Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the development, stating that the agency has activated a multi-responder plan to manage the situation.
“All hands are on deck to extinguish the flames. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes where possible,” he said.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion sent flames and thick smoke into the air, causing panic among road users. Emergency responders, including firefighters and law enforcement officers, are on the scene working to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
This incident brings back memories of a similar tragedy on June 28, 2018, when a fuel-laden tanker lost control due to brake failure and overturned on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The spilled fuel ignited, causing a massive fire that engulfed several vehicles. At least 12 people were confirmed dead, and over 54 vehicles were destroyed in that disaster.
The 2018 explosion raised serious concerns about road safety and the regulation of fuel tankers in Nigeria. Following that tragedy, authorities called for stricter regulations and better enforcement to prevent similar occurrences.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu assured the public that emergency operations are ongoing to contain Tuesday night’s fire and assess the full extent of the damage. “The vehicle carrying gas overturned, leading to the incident. I believe it is a 50,000-litre tanker. However, the operation is still ongoing,” he added.
Authorities are urging motorists and residents to remain cautious and avoid the area while emergency teams work to manage the situation. More details will be provided as the response efforts progress.
