The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a notorious National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) member, Samsideen Oladiti, widely known as “Shamelon,” over his alleged involvement in two separate violent crimes on Lagos Island.
According to police sources, the 55-year-old suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, as investigations intensify.
Reports indicate that on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Shamelon allegedly launched a violent attack on a dispatch rider at Lagos Island. Eyewitnesses said he struck the rider repeatedly with a helmet and his fists, leaving the victim critically injured. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, placed on oxygen, and remains under intensive medical care. A viral video of the assault showed Shamelon pushing aside a woman who tried to intervene while his gang continued the brutal beating, sparking public outrage.
Police further linked the suspect to an earlier case on August 28, 2025, when he allegedly assaulted a man identified as Adeshina, striking him multiple times on the head and face with a metallic ring. Despite medical treatment, Adeshina succumbed to his injuries on September 17, 2025. His body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
Following news of Adeshina’s death, tension erupted in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathizers stormed Shamelon’s office. The angry crowd set two of his motorcycles ablaze, leading to chaos in the area.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a combined team of mobile and conventional officers to restore calm and prevent further escalation.
In a statement, the Lagos State Police Command vowed to ensure justice is served, stressing that law and order will not be compromised despite the violent activities of notorious individuals in Lagos Island.
Authorities also assured residents that the suspect will face the full wrath of the law as investigations continue.
