A 28-year-old Kenyan woman has been arrested in a major drug trafficking crackdown after authorities discovered 294 grams of cocaine allegedly hidden inside her body cavity, law enforcement officials confirmed.

According to a statement issued on Friday, April 18, 2025, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, Jane Njeri Muigai, was detained by a multi-agency security team stationed along the Moyale-Nairobi transit route, known for being a key corridor for drug trafficking from the Northern Frontier.

“The suspect was arrested aboard a Nairobi-bound bus from Moyale after displaying suspicious behavior. A thorough body search conducted by female officers revealed the concealed narcotics,” the DCI reported.

Anti-Narcotics Crackdown Intensifies in Kenya’s Northern Corridor

Law enforcement agents flagged the bus at a checkpoint as part of an ongoing operation aimed at disrupting narcotics smuggling into Kenya’s capital from bordering regions. Officials said the suspect’s anxious demeanor and evasive conduct drew the attention of officers, prompting a targeted search that led to the drug seizure.

“She was exhibiting signs commonly associated with concealed trafficking, prompting an immediate and thorough inspection,” an officer involved in the operation revealed.

The seized cocaine, weighing 294 grams, has since been handed over to the anti-narcotics division, and the suspect is being held at Moyale Police Station, pending further investigation and prosecution.

Kenyan Authorities Widen Net Against Drug Syndicates

Authorities have intensified surveillance and screening efforts across major border towns and highway checkpoints, particularly in areas connecting to East Africa’s known trafficking routes. The DCI reiterated its commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in drug importation and internal distribution.

“We are scaling up efforts to identify, arrest, and prosecute individuals and groups behind narcotics trafficking across Kenya,” a DCI spokesperson affirmed.

Rising Drug Concerns in East Africa

The arrest underscores the growing concern over drug abuse and trafficking in Kenya and across East Africa, where criminal networks continue to exploit porous borders and underserved communities to move illicit substances.

Law enforcement has urged citizens to report suspicious activities and collaborate in the fight against drugs, warning that smugglers are increasingly using unconventional and dangerous methods to evade detection.
