Armed men launched a violent attack along the Osokoko–Obajana road in Kogi State, targeting two commercial 18-seater buses on Thursday afternoon.
Sources said the attackers successfully intercepted one of the buses, abducting all the passengers on board, while the second bus narrowly escaped. The exact number of kidnapped travellers has not yet been confirmed, according to reports by Egbe Mekun Parrot.
Security operatives from the Nigerian Army reportedly arrived moments after the ambush and engaged the gunmen in a shootout to reclaim the area. This response led to a viral video showing stranded travellers waiting on the highway until soldiers announced that the route had been secured.
Eyewitnesses said the bandits attempted to barricade the road to raid vehicles, causing fear among residents and motorists. Locals have since advised commuters to steer clear of the route until full safety is guaranteed.
A woman in a circulating video confirmed the restoration of calm, saying, “Road don clear, all thanks to the Nigerian Army, everybody don dey go back.”
Although authorities have not issued an official statement, witnesses say the soldiers successfully drove back the attackers, preventing further harm or property loss.
This incident adds to rising security concerns across Kogi State. Just a day earlier, bandits attacked Kiri High School in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba Bunu LGA. Vigilante members quickly responded and rescued all abducted students. However, the operation claimed the life of one vigilante, and a resident reported that a Hausa man also died.
The latest ambush comes amid a troubling surge of mass abductions across Nigeria’s north-central region, where more than 400 individuals—mostly schoolchildren—have been kidnapped since mid-November, prompting condemnation from global organisations and religious leaders
