Bread Price Projected to Rise in Nigeria as Russia Burns Wheat Fields in Ukraine

July 12,2022

Russia has been intentionally setting wheat fields on fire in Ukraine, according to video footage released by Daily Express on Tuesday.

This implies that global food supply will continue to be disrupted. Food security remains under threat due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Nigeria

An April 2022 report from Statista revealed that a 500 gramme loaf of white bread in Nigeria was as expensive as $1.14. The cost of bread in Nigeria was the highest price among the selected African countries.

Other African countries paid an average of less than a dollar for the same loaf of bread. While it was sold for $0.91 in South Africa, it was $0.61 in Egypt, $0.49 in Morocco, $0.48 in Kenya, $0.82 in Ghana and $0.71 in Mauritius.

Several reports have shown Russian troops targeting and stealing the food supplies of Ukraine, one of the world’s largest wheat and barley suppliers. Russia has prevented export of Ukraine wheat through the Black Sea route into the global market. This has contributed directly to the rise in food prices in 2022.

After moving grains from Ukraine’s wheat storage, Russian troops are believed to be burning grain fields in Ukraine to negatively affect harvests. The cost of bread, wheat flour, pasta, maize, barley and other derivatives will continue to rise and supplies will dwindle. This has sparked fears of a famine that could starve a significant population of the world
