Bayelsa Community Threatens Showdown with Oando Over Gas Pipeline Dispute

By SpringsNewsNG
he Egeberiki community in the Okoroma clan of Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, has issued a stern warning to Oando Energy Resources, demanding immediate negotiations over the Obama/Kolo Creek 8 32-kilometre gas pipeline project.
In a letter from its solicitors, Emmanuel Isangidoho & Co, addressed to Oando’s General Manager through the Divisional Manager of Stakeholders Management and Community Development, the community emphasized the need for discussions to ensure peace, safety, and security.
Dated February 14, 2024, and obtained by South-South PUNCH in Yenagoa, the letter accused Oando of bypassing the rightful landowners in negotiations, favoring other groups instead. It asserted that the Egeberiki community legally owns the land from Points OBK 3 to OBK 12, as well as Obama Oil Wells 5, 7, 9, and 12, based on a Supreme Court judgment—a fact known to Nigeria Agip Oil Company, whose assets Oando inherited.
The letter demanded that Oando cease all engagements with any other entities claiming ownership of the land and instead initiate discussions with Egeberiki, the legitimate host community. It stressed that Oando must fulfill its social responsibilities in accordance with Nigerian laws to maintain peace and avoid any conflicts.
The community accused Oando of recognizing “false landlords,” labeling the company’s actions as “provocative with potential consequences,” which they hoped to avoid. The letter urged the company to adhere to legal principles and engage directly with Egeberiki as it proceeds with operations.
When contacted, Oando Energy Resources spokesperson, Alero Balogun, stated she was unaware of the letter and advised inquiries be directed to Corporate Communications. However, as of the time of this report, no response had been received from the department.
