Barcelona secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals for the second consecutive season with a commanding 3-1 victory over Benfica at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, sealing a 4-1 aggregate win.

A Moment of Silence and a Bright Start

Before kickoff, both teams observed a moment of silence in honor of Barcelona’s first-team doctor, Carles Minarro Garcia, who had recently passed away.

Despite the early intensity from both sides, it took just 11 minutes for Barcelona to extend their aggregate lead. Lamine Yamal, the 17-year-old sensation, drove into the box and delivered a dangerous ball that found Raphinha, who expertly guided it past Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to make it 1-0 on the night.

Benfica’s Quick Response

The visitors responded almost immediately. Two minutes later, a corner delivery was flicked on by Robert Lewandowski, allowing Nicolas Otamendi to head home at the far post, leveling the score at 1-1 on the night but still leaving Benfica trailing 2-1 on aggregate.

Yamal and Raphinha Steal the Show

Barcelona regained control in the 27th minute with a stunning goal from Yamal. Cutting inside from the right, the teenager unleashed a curling left-footed effort that left Trubin with no chance, restoring Barcelona’s lead and making him the youngest player to both score and assist in a Champions League match.

Shortly before halftime, Raphinha struck again. Initially ruled offside, VAR overturned the decision, confirming his goal and effectively putting the tie beyond Benfica’s reach. His strike also made him the first Brazilian to score 11 goals in a single Champions League campaign.

Second Half Control and a Quarter-Final Berth

Benfica thought they had pulled a goal back early in the second half through Fredrik Aursnes, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Despite some pressure from the Portuguese side, Barcelona managed the game well, controlling possession and ensuring no late surprises.

With Sunday’s crucial La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid in mind, Barcelona took their foot off the gas in the latter stages. Nonetheless, their unbeaten streak in 2025 extended to 17 matches (14 wins, 3 draws), showing their resilience under manager Hansi Flick.

Man of the Match: Raphinha

While Yamal’s brilliance was undeniable, Raphinha edged the Man of the Match award with his two goals and assist, taking his season tally to 27 goals across all competitions.

Match Stats:

  • Possession: Barcelona 65%-35% Benfica
  • Shots: Barcelona 20-8 Benfica
  • Shots on Target: Barcelona 6-2 Benfica
  • Corners: Barcelona 1-6 Benfica
  • Fouls: Barcelona 4-8 Benfica

Barcelona’s attacking depth and form make them a serious contender for Champions League glory this season. However, their high defensive line remains a question mark as they progress to the next round.
