Zamfara State was once again plunged into mourning on Friday, July 18, 2025, after armed bandits launched a deadly attack on the Jangebe farming community in Talata Mafara Local Government Area, killing at least nine people and abducting several others.
Among the victims were five members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (ZCPG), including their commander, Garba Dogo, who were reportedly targeted while trying to protect locals working on farmlands.
The incident was confirmed by a security analyst known as Bakatsine, who disclosed the details in a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
“This afternoon, bandits attacked farmers in Jangebe, Talata Mafara LGA, Zamfara State, killing nine people including five ZCPG members and their commander, Garba Dogo. Several people were also abducted,” Bakatsine posted.
Escalating Insecurity in Zamfara
This latest attack highlights the deteriorating security situation in northwestern Nigeria, where armed banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and deadly raids on rural communities have become rampant. Zamfara, in particular, remains one of the hardest-hit states despite ongoing military operations and local security initiatives like the Zamfara Community Protection Guards.
Residents say the attackers arrived on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic and forcing others to flee into nearby bushes.
Government Yet to Respond
As of the time of this report, Zamfara State authorities and the Nigeria Police Force have not issued an official statement on the incident. However, sources suggest that a manhunt for the perpetrators has been launched and security presence in the area has been reinforced.
The continued violence has raised renewed concerns about the effectiveness of current security strategies and the safety of farmers in rural communities, especially during the peak of the planting season.
Call for Federal Intervention
Community leaders and rights groups are calling for urgent federal intervention to prevent further loss of lives and displacement of residents. Many are demanding increased military presence, intelligence support, and coordinated responses to protect vulnerable farming populations from sustained attacks.Published by SpringnewsNG Media Limited
