Atlético Madrid delivered an attacking masterclass as they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in an action-packed UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday night at Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
The Spanish side started the match in explosive fashion. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring just six minutes into the game before Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead in the 14th minute. Moments later, Julián Álvarez added a third goal in the 15th minute to stun the visitors.
Atlético continued their relentless pressure when Robin Le Normand struck in the 22nd minute, putting the home side firmly in control before halftime.
Tottenham managed to respond when Pedro Porro pulled one back in the 26th minute, but Atlético’s dominance continued in the second half. Julián Álvarez completed his brace in the 55th minute to extend the lead to five goals.
The match grew increasingly physical as several players from both sides were booked by the referee. Pablo Barrios, Alexander Sørloth, Ademola Lookman, Nico González and Koke were cautioned for Atlético, while Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and players Conor Gallagher, Dominic Solanke, João Palhinha and Xavi Simons also received yellow cards.
Tottenham scored a late consolation goal through Dominic Solanke in the 76th minute, but the match had already slipped beyond their reach.
The emphatic win strengthens Atlético Madrid’s push in the Champions League while leaving Tottenham with plenty to reflect on after a difficult night in Spain.
