Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced deep concern over what he described as a growing sense of hopelessness among Nigeria’s young population.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Atiku lamented that many young Nigerians are disillusioned by economic hardship, election irregularities, and poor governance, which have eroded their confidence in the nation’s future.
“I am extremely worried about how young Nigerians are losing hope in the future of our country,” he wrote. “Each time I engage with youths who complain about fraudulent elections and the hardship caused by bad leadership, it leaves me deeply saddened.”
The former Vice President revealed that he recently met with a delegation of youths from the 19 northern states, led by Alhaji Adamu Bappa Gombe, who expressed frustration that their votes no longer seem to matter and that government policies are negatively affecting their livelihoods.
Atiku urged the youth not to surrender to despair or political apathy, stressing that meaningful change can only come through active participation in elections.
He warned that the current 25–30 percent voter turnout rate in each election cycle is dangerously low and must improve if Nigeria is to experience real democratic transformation.
“The change you desire will not come through indifference,” Atiku said. “Mobilize your peers to participate fully in the democratic process. We must all play our part to rescue this country from anti-democratic forces.”
Atiku’s message comes amid rising frustration among Nigerian youths over unemployment, inflation, insecurity, and a perceived lack of accountability in governance
