The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has confirmed that discussions have commenced with the Federal Government to address issues that led to its ongoing industrial action.

This was disclosed in a Strike Bulletin No. 2 released by the National Strike Coordinating Committee (NSCC) and signed by Dr. Christopher Piwuna over the weekend.

The announcement follows ASUU’s declaration of a two-week warning strike last Monday, which has effectively halted academic activities across public universities nationwide.

In its latest update, the union expressed satisfaction with the unity and determination shown by its members, adding that notable progress had been made in certain negotiation areas.

According to ASUU, discussions have yielded results on issues such as the release of third-party deductions, payment of promotion arrears, mainstreaming of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), and the resolution of land disputes involving the University of Abuja. The union also noted progress on cases of member victimisation at Kogi State University, Lagos State University, and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

“Our members have demonstrated remarkable dedication to this cause. We must continue to stand firm and united as the struggle enters its crucial phase,” the bulletin stated.

The warning strike is expected to conclude next Monday, pending the outcome of ongoing talks between both parties.
