Arsenal Drop Interest in Nico Williams as Barcelona and Bayern Lead Transfer Race

June 19, 2025 – London, UK
Arsenal FC have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, despite previous strong interest in the 22-year-old winger. The decision comes amid growing competition from European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who are now frontrunners to secure his signature this summer.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Gunners are no longer actively pursuing Williams, even as manager Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options following Arsenal’s third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League.

Arsenal’s Attack Under Scrutiny

Arteta’s side managed just 69 goals in the 2024/25 campaign, significantly trailing behind title winners Liverpool, who netted 86 times. With forwards like Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz facing criticism for inconsistent performances, fans had hoped to see a more dynamic winger added to the squad.

Williams, who impressed for Spain during Euro 2024, had emerged as a promising target. Known for his blistering pace, dribbling ability, and threat in behind defences, the winger would have offered Arsenal a new dimension on the left flank opposite Bukayo Saka.

However, concerns over Williams’ modest goal return—he has never scored more than six league goals in a season—may have influenced Arsenal’s decision to withdraw. That said, he registered 11 assists in the 2023/24 season, showing value as a creator.

Rodrygo Now on Arsenal’s Radar

With Williams no longer a target, Arsenal are reportedly exploring a potential move for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo. The Brazilian is technically gifted and experienced in Champions League football, but lacks Williams’ direct speed and vertical threat.

If Rodrygo joins, Arteta may have to find alternative ways to inject pace and penetration into the team, possibly through a more dynamic centre-forward option or tactical changes.

There are also questions about Gabriel Martinelli’s future role, as a new signing could see him relegated to a bench role—a scenario the Brazilian may not welcome after years as a regular starter.

Barcelona, Bayern Now Favourites for Williams

Meanwhile, Barcelona and Bayern Munich remain heavily linked with Nico Williams. Barcelona are believed to be pushing hard for the Spanish international, viewing him as a long-term replacement for their aging wide players. Bayern are also in the mix as they reshape their squad under new management.

As the summer transfer window heats up, Arsenal’s decision to step back could either be a missed opportunity or a calculated move, depending on who they bring in next.
