Brentford boss Thomas Frank had two options for the North London derby: set up offensively and risk being ripped apart, or sit deep and frustrate Arsenal.
Had he gone with an open 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 and Arsenal ran riot, critics would have called him naïve. Instead, he opted for a compact, cautious approach — and still faced scrutiny even though the plan wasn’t entirely unreasonable.
Arsenal were missing Gabriel Magalhães, weakening their set-piece strength and removing a key part of their defensive setup. Meanwhile, Tottenham arrived with the best away record in the Premier League, making a low block and counter-attacking strategy a logical move.
Yet Spurs’ biggest failure was ignoring the most dangerous player on the pitch: Eberechi Eze.
And he punished them.
