Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have apprehended a notorious bandit leader believed to be responsible for multiple cases of kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benue–Taraba corridor.
The arrest was carried out on December 21, 2025, by soldiers of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Wukari, following actionable intelligence at Vaase community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. The suspect, identified as Fidelis Gayama, is said to be a high-profile target who had been on the radar of security agencies for some time.
Preliminary findings revealed that Gayama is a close associate of Aka Dogo, a wanted kingpin of an armed criminal gang. He is alleged to be a key figure behind attacks that have terrorised residents and travellers along the Kente–Wukari Road and surrounding border communities between Benue and Taraba states.
Security officials further disclosed that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force at the Vaase Outpost confirmed the suspect as one of those earlier declared wanted by the Beji Police Division in Ukum LGA.
In a statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson of the Brigade, Lt. Umar Muhammad, the Army confirmed that the suspect is currently in military custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution in line with the law.
Commending the troops for their professionalism and tactical efficiency, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, described the arrest as a major setback for criminal elements operating in the area. He reiterated the Brigade’s resolve to sustain aggressive operations to protect lives and property, while calling on the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence
