The Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the mysterious deaths of a soldier and his wife at the Wawa Cantonment in Minna, Niger State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, confirmed the incident, identifying the deceased as Lance Corporal Femi and his unnamed wife.
According to the Army, the couple was discovered lifeless in their residence at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, within the military base. Preliminary findings indicate that the soldier, who was on official duty inside the cantonment, had earlier sought permission to briefly attend to personal matters before returning to his post.
“The remains of the deceased have been deposited in the hospital morgue while a detailed investigation is underway to determine the cause of the tragedy,” the statement said.
Captain Nwankwo added that the Nigerian Army deeply regrets the unfortunate incident and extends condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured that the incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the findings made public once concluded.
He also appealed for public understanding and patience, emphasizing that the Army will ensure transparency and preventive measures to avert similar occurrences in the future.
