Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a respected news anchor and producer with Arise Television, was tragically killed during an armed robbery at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025.
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the incident and announced that investigations are underway to track down the attackers.
In a statement by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of Arise TV management, the station described Maduagwu—affectionately known as Sommie—as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family.”
“Somtochukwu passed away in the early hours of Monday following an armed robbery incident in her Katampe home, which is currently under police investigation,” the statement read.
Life and Career
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was not only a seasoned broadcaster but also a qualified lawyer. She joined Arise TV as an anchor and producer, where she quickly became known for her engaging delivery and professionalism on air.
“Beyond the studio, Sommie was a lawyer, a supportive colleague, and a friend to many,” Arise TV’s management noted.
Tributes and Condolences
The station expressed deep sorrow over her untimely death and extended condolences to her family.
“We mourn with Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones. Her voice may be silent, but her passion, dedication, and legacy will remain part of our memory. We call for a swift investigation and prosecution of those responsible for this heinous act,” the statement concluded.
The tragic loss has sparked calls for stronger security measures in Abuja as residents continue to grapple with rising cases of armed robbery and violent crime.
