An unnamed motor apprentice was hospitalized after sustaining injuries in a fiery accident involving a petrol tanker and a truck on the Oyo/Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Michael Koleoso Government Reserved Area (GRA) along the busy highway, when a petroleum tanker carrying 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) collided with an empty Mack truck container.
The collision caused the petrol tanker to lose control and ignite immediately, sparking a fire that prompted a rapid emergency response.
According to Hon. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, fire personnel arrived at the scene promptly at 10:30 AM. Led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Tijani, the team quickly contained and extinguished the blaze using specialized chemicals, preventing a major explosion and averting a potential disaster.
While no fatalities were reported, the apprentice sustained minor injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The fire service attributed the cause of the crash to the petrol tanker and the truck attempting to navigate potholes on a narrow, single-lane section of the expressway.
Hon. Akinwande urged all motorists to exercise caution, especially on challenging road conditions, to avoid similar accidents in the future.
