The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured chairmanship victories in five of the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory, tightening its grip on local governance in the FCT. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded its lone win in Gwagwalada.
Official results released on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed the APC emerging victorious in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje.
In Gwagwalada, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim won the contest with 22,165 votes, defeating APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who garnered 17,788 votes. The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, declared Kasim winner after confirming that he met all statutory requirements. Other contenders lagged behind, with APGA polling 1,687 votes and ADC recording 1,366.
In Bwari, APC’s Joshua Ishaku clinched the chairmanship seat with 18,466 votes, comfortably ahead of candidates from the ADC and ZLP. AMAC chairman, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, also retained his seat after polling 40,295 votes to defeat rivals from the ADC, SDP, NNPP and PDP.
APC candidates Umar Abdullahi Abubakar (Abaji), Nuhu Daniel (Kwali) and Danjuma Shekwolo (Kuje) likewise topped the polls in their respective councils.
The outcome confirms the APC’s dominance in the FCT polls, winning five councils, while the PDP settled for Gwagwalada alone. However, the elections held on Saturday were reportedly affected by low voter turnout, allegations of vote buying, logistical challenges and late arrival of electoral officials.
