APC Chairman Ganduje Opens Door for Kwankwaso’s Return, Says NNPP Leader Is Politically Stranded

May 2025 — Abuja, Nigeria
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has signaled that the party is open to welcoming former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, back into its fold amid growing political uncertainty surrounding the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Ganduje made this statement while addressing the media shortly after receiving Alhaji Yusuf Ata, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, in Abuja.

“The APC is expanding democratic values across Nigeria,” Ganduje said. On the issue of Kwankwaso, the APC Chairman added, “Kwankwaso is like a fish out of water, trying to return to the stream. We are ready to accommodate him. A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

He continued, “When your younger brother comes seeking shelter, it’s only morally right to open the door. We cannot say we won’t accept him back if he chooses to return.”

The remarks come amid persistent speculation that Kwankwaso may defect from the NNPP, where he remains a central figure, especially in Kano State. The NNPP is currently grappling with internal divisions, further fueling talks of a possible political shift by its leader.

Yusuf Ata, a former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, also weighed in on the situation. While pledging full support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign, Ata expressed personal reservations about Kwankwaso rejoining the APC.

“I would prefer he stays out,” Ata said, “but if the national chairman believes bringing him in is the right move, then I’ll respect that decision.”

Kwankwaso, who has long maintained a stronghold in Kano politics through his Kwankwasiyya movement, has yet to confirm any intention of rejoining the APC. However, the growing challenges within his current party may push him to reconsider his political options ahead of 2027.
