A tragic building collapse has claimed one life and left eight others injured in the Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos State, on Thursday.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, which occurred at No. 28, Baale Alayabiagba Street, Alayabiagba community, around 11:09 a.m.

According to the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the site following distress calls.

“Upon arrival, responders discovered that a three-storey building with a penthouse had completely collapsed, trapping several workers under the debris,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

He said eight adult males were rescued alive and received medical attention from officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to Ajeromi General Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, one male victim was recovered dead from the rubble.

While the cause of the collapse remains uncertain, eyewitnesses reported that the building was undergoing manual demolition when it suddenly gave way, trapping some of the workers.

Rescue and recovery efforts involved multiple agencies, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police Force.

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that rescue operations have been concluded, while investigations are ongoing to determine whether structural weaknesses or human error caused the collapse.
