Anambra Town Unions Reject Claims of Compulsory Levies for Soludo’s Re-election Support

The leadership of town unions in Anambra State, operating under the umbrella of the Anambra Town Unions Council, has refuted allegations suggesting it mandated community leaders to contribute financially to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s campaign ahead of the next election.
A letter circulating widely online, signed by Comrade Ken Okoli and Comrade Orstager P. Chinweuba and titled “Support For Mr. Governor (Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, CFR),” claimed that youth leaders and women leaders were directed to make payments of N30,000 each, while Presidents General of communities were expected to pay N75,000. The alleged document warned of penalties for any failure to comply, asserting that the funds would be used exclusively to promote Soludo’s political bid.
Responding to the development, Chief Peter Onyejegbu, the Media Coordinator of ASTUC and President General of Uke Community, dismissed the document as a deliberate attempt to malign the council due to its favourable relationship with the current administration.
Onyejegbu acknowledged that members of the organization had voluntarily expressed support for Soludo and were making personal contributions. However, he maintained that no individual or group was compelled to provide funds, nor had anyone been threatened with sanctions for opting not to participate.
He explained that the contributions were a gesture of goodwill in appreciation of the administration’s support for town unions. According to Onyejegbu, Governor Soludo increased their monthly stipends from N20,000 to N100,000 and has continued to promote policies aimed at strengthening grassroots governance.
He further stated that the governor’s plan to elevate town unions into a recognized fourth tier of governance in Anambra State has inspired confidence among community leaders. This, he said, is the primary reason for the voluntary show of political solidarity.
The ASTUC official maintained that town unions, like all citizens, possess the constitutional freedom to support any political figure or party of their choice, provided such actions are undertaken lawfully and without coercion.
