The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended a 24-year-old suspect, identified as Muanaenye Chekwube Victor, for allegedly orchestrating the kidnapping of his own friend and collecting a ransom of N5.3 million (in dollar equivalent) alongside his criminal gang.

The arrest was confirmed in a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Sunday, June 30, 2025. Ikenga revealed that Victor was arrested by operatives attached to the Uli Divisional Police Headquarters on Friday, June 26.

According to the statement, investigations uncovered that the suspect lured his unsuspecting friend under the guise of escorting him to meet another acquaintance. Upon arrival, the victim was ambushed and kidnapped by Victor’s gang. To divert suspicion, Victor pretended to be one of the kidnapped victims.

“The suspect confessed to planning the abduction and collecting a ransom worth N5.3 million in foreign currency before releasing the victim. He is currently cooperating with investigators and providing leads to apprehend his accomplices,” the police spokesman said.

Victor will face prosecution once investigations are concluded, Ikenga added, assuring the public of the Command’s continued efforts in improving safety and security across Anambra State.

In a related development, police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Awkuzu have arrested 10 additional suspects in connection with the death of an elder statesman, who was kidnapped and later found dead near a piggery farm in Nimo.

The victim was abducted from his farm on June 23 by suspected hoodlums. Despite a ransom payment of N15 million by his family, his lifeless body was discovered a few days later at the same location.

Ikenga stated, “The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, and further actions will be taken based on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu. Updates on the investigation will be provided in due course.”

The Anambra State Police Command continues to intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
