The Anambra State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday joined workers across the country in a nationwide protest to condemn the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria.

The peaceful rally, which began at about 11:05am at the NLC Secretariat near Regina Caeli Junction in Awka, proceeded through major routes and ended at the popular UNIZIK Junction. All affiliate unions in the state participated in the demonstration.

Addressing workers after the march, Anambra NLC Chairman, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, said the protest was aimed at drawing the Federal Government’s attention to the deteriorating security situation nationwide.

According to him, the action reflects a collective expression of pain and a patriotic demand for urgent intervention, as Nigerians continue to face killings, kidnappings, banditry, terrorism, communal violence and other criminal activities.

Nwafor noted that insecurity has forced citizens to live in constant fear, whether at work, on highways, in farms, schools, markets or even in their homes, stressing that workers are among the hardest hit by the crisis.

He explained that the NLC views the protection of lives and property as essential to productivity, economic growth and social stability, adding that no country can achieve sustainable development or attract investment without guaranteeing the safety of its people.

The labour leader further lamented that the persistent insecurity has led to business closures, declining agricultural output, rising transportation costs and increased inflation, with workers and the poor bearing the brunt of the impact.

Nwafor emphasised that the protest was not an act of hostility against the government but a lawful and moral call for immediate, coordinated and effective action to address Nigeria’s security challenges.

He urged the Federal Government to strengthen security efforts by equipping and supporting security agencies, improving their welfare and adopting more effective strategies, noting that existing measures have failed to adequately protect citizens.

The Anambra NLC chairman reaffirmed the congress’ commitment to peaceful engagement, national unity and the pursuit of a safer Nigeria where workers and citizens can live and work without fear.
